This past march, the 6th grade HYPERS traveled to Alaska to follow the Iditarod-a 1150 mile dogsled race across Alaska. They did this virtually. By becoming Iditarod insiders at Iditarod.com, they were able to watch live videos online of happenings each day. They learned about and followed all 71 mushers (racers) -each student becoming an expert on 3-4 mushers. Then, they researched topics of interest related to the race-Alaskan history, the history of the race, endangered animals of Alaska, training techniques, and Eskimo art-just to name a few. All of their research, photos, videos, and sources were then loaded onto an individual online wiki created by each student along with the help of Mr.Lemoine, the technology teacher. The students connected their Iditarod journey to all the subject areas-English, Social Studies, Math, Science, Art, Fitness, Music, and Technology, on their wiki. If you get a chance, go to the class website and click on a few of the wiki links listed there. It's quite a journey!
